KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Media Council (MMC) has called for a transparent and professional investigation into the assault of journalist and TwentyTwo13 co-founder Haresh Deol, urging the public to refrain from speculation while authorities work to determine the facts.

In its statement today, the MMC expressed deep concern over the assault, which reportedly involved two unidentified individuals, with one believed to have recorded the incident.

It said the circumstances of the attack, particularly the act of filming the assault raise the possibility of it being a premeditated act.

“The MMC trusts that the authorities will take the appropriate steps to ascertain the facts of the case and ensure the matter is addressed fairly and professionally. The public should avoid unnecessary speculation pending the outcome of such investigations,” the council said.

The Council stressed that it views any form of violence, harassment, or intimidation against media practitioners with “utmost seriousness,” noting that such acts carry broader implications for media freedom.

Incidents that intimidate journalists, it added, affect the public’s ability to receive “accurate, timely, and pressure-free information,” thereby damaging the public interest.

“The safety of media practitioners is fundamental to a free and responsible press. All parties are urged to respect the working space of journalists and refrain from any behaviour that may compromise their security,” the statement read.

MMC reaffirmed its commitment to improving standards of safety, professionalism, and integrity in the media industry, stressing that journalists must be allowed to carry out their work independently and ethically.

“We stand in solidarity with Haresh Deol and with all journalists who continue to serve the public with dedication and courage,” it said.

Meanwhile, Sports Writers Association Malaysia (SAM) presidet, Norismadi Abd Manap has called for an immediate investigation into the matter.

"An assault on any journalist is an extreme action that must not be tolerated. SAM does not want its members working in fear and trauma as a result of such attacks,” he said

It was understood that Haresh had been in discussion with several acquaintances before he was attacked while walking alone to his car. – November 25, 2025
