Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Road Transport Department (JPJ) held its first-ever Media Engagement Session recently.
It aimed to strengthen collaboration with the media and improve dissemination of information regarding the department’s programmes and initiatives.
State JPJ Director Datuk Mohd Harris Ali said the session brought together practitioners from both government and private media agencies to foster closer ties and mutual understanding, particularly in the enforcement and implementation of JPJ policies.
“JPJ greatly appreciates the support and assistance of media agencies in helping to spread awareness of our programmes and initiatives, which ultimately aim to enhance service delivery to the public,” he said after the session, held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
Mohd Harris also said that JPJ is currently conducting enforcement operations for commercial vehicles, including checks on the Speed Limitation Device (SLD) requirement as recently announced by the Transport Minister.
“We are also conducting seat belt enforcement operations and technical inspections to ensure all vehicles comply with road safety regulations,” he added.
He stressed that advocacy efforts are ongoing to raise awareness among bus operators and passengers on the importance of seat belt use.
“Awareness must be improved, as many serious accidents and fatalities are caused by not wearing seat belts,” he said.
A recent inspection by Puspakom on Oct 1–2 revealed 49 commercial vehicles operating without SLDs. JPJ will be issuing Notice 114 to the respective operators for further inspection.
Meanwhile, Mohd Harris said JPJ Sabah is ready to assist the State Government in managing road traffic and safety during the upcoming State Legislative Assembly Election.
Also present at the session were JPJ Sabah Deputy Director Sapiah Putit and Chief Assistant Director of the Corporate Communication and Media Division of the Sabah Information Department, Dr. Diana Dominic.
