Media task force condemns slay try on radio broadcaster

MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) expressed concern over the reported attempt on the life of radio broadcaster Jay Lavapiez, who survived an ambush in Barangay Cagay, Roxas City, early Monday morning.

In a statement, the PTFOMS noted the attack occurred at around 5 a.m. while Lavapiez was driving along a national highway on his way to his radio station.

Initial reports yielded that at least two motorcycle-riding suspects blocked Lavapiez’s vehicle before opening fire. Authorities recovered four spent shell casings at the scene.

“The PTFOMS and the Philippine National Police Media Vanguards are currently conducting an investigation to thoroughly examine this cowardly act and ensure that justice is served,” the statement read.

“We condemn all acts of violence and intimidation against journalists and assert that such actions have no place in a democratic society,” it added.

The task force further stated that Police Regional Office 6 (PRO6) Director PBGen. Randulf Tuano has directed police units to immediately act on the case and give it the highest priority.

It likewise called on media organizations, civil society groups, and government agencies to work together to strengthen measures protecting journalists and ensure a safe environment for media professionals carrying out their duties.

“Together, we can foster an environment where media professionals can operate without fear, ensuring the critical flow of information that is vital to our society,” the PTFOMS said.
