A medical laboratory technologist working at the Pathology Department of Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) Johor Baru faced legal proceedings in the Sessions Court, charged with 25 counts of allegedly accepting bribes totaling RM16,150. Saifulamin Sabran, 51, maintained his plea of not guilty to all charges during the court session presided over by Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail.
The charges revolve around accusations that the accused agreed to receive cash bribes from six individuals, all connected to his official duties. The sums, ranging from RM500 to RM2,000, were purportedly deposited into bank accounts belonging to intermediaries involved in the transactions. The locations of these alleged offenses spanned across two banks with branches in Johor Bahru, Bandar Baru Uda, Kota Tinggi, Desaru, Kulai, and Simpang Renggam.
The charges brought against Saifulamin Sabran fall under Section 165 of the Penal Code, carrying the potential for a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Julaila Jamaludin from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) requested bail set at RM13,000 with one surety. Additionally, she sought conditions, including prohibiting the accused from harassing prosecution witnesses, requiring him to report to the Johor Baru MACC office monthly, and surrendering his passport to the court.
In response, Saifulamin Sabran's lawyer, Shaik Saleem SM Daud, highlighted that his client has a family to support, including a wife and three children. The court granted bail at RM10,000 with one surety, incorporating the conditions proposed by the prosecution.
The case is scheduled for mention on April 21, marking the beginning of legal proceedings in what appears to be a complex bribery situation within the medical laboratory field. As the court process unfolds, the judiciary will scrutinize the evidence presented, emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity in healthcare institutions and addressing corruption allegations to uphold public trust. The outcome of this case will likely set a precedent for ethical standards within the medical profession, underscoring the significance of accountability in preserving the credibility of healthcare services.
