At Mehr Chand Polytechnic College, a mental wellness centre is being set up for students to address mental health challenges faced in technical education institutions.
Principal Dr Jagroop Singh said the initiative will be launched from the new academic session with the aim of supporting students’ mental well-being and overall development. He stated that the centre will provide facilities such as yoga, meditation and mental health counselling to help students maintain sound physical and mental health.
He further added that students will be encouraged to adopt a healthy and medicine-free lifestyle so they can focus better on their technical education. As part of the initiative, a dedicated mental wellness room (stress relief room) is also being established, where yoga trainers and mental health counsellors will directly interact with students.
Dr Jagroop Singh further said that admissions in the college are in full swing and students are reporting in large numbers. He mentioned that this is the only polytechnic college in Punjab whose programmes have received accreditation from NBA and in 2025, it was honoured at the national level by National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research Chandigarh as one of the best polytechnic institutions.
He also pointed out that nowadays even students at institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management are facing mental stress and, in some cases, committing suicide. Therefore, the establishment of the Mental Wellness Centre (Stress Relief Room) is an effort to bring students closer to nature and help them maintain emotional balance.
