PETALING JAYA: The Melaka State Legislative Assembly is expected to be dissolved today, paving the way for the state election.
Sources said the dissolution letter had been signed, with an official announcement expected this afternoon.
A press conference is expected to be held at Seri Negeri after the state government meeting and post-Exco meeting chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.
All Barisan Nasional assemblymen are understood to have received invitations yesterday to attend the meeting at Seri Negeri at 2.30pm today.
The development comes amid repeated indications from Ab Rauf that the dissolution is drawing closer.
On Sept 17, however, Ab Rauf said the date for the dissolution had yet to be set, adding that several state administrative matters needed to be resolved first. He said the date would be announced once finalised.
He had earlier indicated that the assembly could be dissolved after Sept 18, referring to the number of Fridays remaining before the move.
The 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly has 28 seats, while the state government’s current mandate is due to expire on Dec 31, 2026.
The last state election, held on Nov 20, 2021, saw Barisan Nasional win 21 seats, while Pakatan Harapan secured five and Perikatan Nasional two.
All eyes are now on Seri Negeri for an official announcement, which, if confirmed, would set in motion the process leading to the Melaka state election.
