AYER KEROH: The Melaka State Legislative Assembly will be dissolved tomorrow, paving the way for the state election.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam had consented to the dissolution, which will take effect on Sept 23.
He said he had earlier met the Yang Dipertua Negeri to seek his consent for the dissolution of the 28-member assembly.
“With the dissolution, the term of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly ends and the next process will be carried out in accordance with the Constitution and decisions of the relevant authorities,” he said at a special press conference at Seri Negeri here today.
Ab Rauf said the state administration would continue to function as a caretaker government until a new state government was formed following the election.
He assured Melaka residents that public services, welfare assistance, security and daily government operations would continue as usual throughout the interim period.
The dissolution sets the stage for the Election Commission (EC) to determine key dates for the state election, including nomination and polling.
Ab Rauf said the state government had already made preparations for the dissolution, while the timing of the election would be determined by the EC.
He said factors such as the possibility of floods and other disasters would need to be taken into consideration.
Ab Rauf also said he would hold discussions with political parties on the next course of action, but declined to disclose details on any potential political cooperation or candidates.
“The most important thing is not my personal interest, but how we want to manage the state for the people of Melaka,” he said.
The Melaka election will be the third state poll this year, after Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
Barisan Nasional (BN) retained Johor in the July 2026 state election, while the BN-PN pact won a majority in Negeri Sembilan in August, taking the state from Pakatan Harapan (PH).
