Water levels at three key dams in Melaka have fallen by 10% to 30%, but state authorities assure supply is sufficient until April with contingency plans in place.

ALOR GAJAH: Water levels at three dams in Melaka have dropped between 10% and 30% due to recent hot and dry weather.

State Works, Infrastructure, Public Facilities and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the supply remains sufficient for the state until April.

“Based on the report received, the Durian Tunggal Dam is at about 70% level, the Jus Dam (about 60%) and the Asahan Dam (about 90%),” he told reporters.

He cited a MetMalaysia forecast expecting high rainfall in the west coast interior, which covers the state’s water catchment areas.

Hameed added that various initiatives are in place to safeguard supply if the dry spell persists.

This includes pumping water from Sungai Gerisik in Johor to the Merlimau water treatment plant.

Several retention ponds in the state have also been activated to channel water to the dams if needed.

The hot weather phenomenon is expected to continue until the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon in June.

The statements were made after the Ayer Limau state assembly ‘Aidilfitri Melaka Sayang Rakyat’ event.
