I write this before the votes are counted, which in political commentary is called "courage" and in every other profession is called “guessing.”

Melaka goes to the polls on 14 November, and 79 candidates are vying for 28 seats. That is about 2.8 candidates per seat.

In 2021 the same 28 seats drew 112 candidates, so this time the ballot paper has been on a diet. It still has opinions, but fewer. https://www.bernama.com/en/politics/news.php?id=2628257 Before nomination day, the arithmetic suggested 13 straight fights, 11 three-cornered contests and four four-cornered ones. Straight fights are the political equivalent of a one-on-one tennis match. Somebody wins, somebody does not, and nobody can blame a spoiler. Multi-cornered fights are more like a kenduri where six uncles claim the same chair. https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/2026/10/31/nomination-day-is-here-melakas-14-day-campaign-starts-today/241334 Now, the alliances. If you have followed them, I salute you. BN and PN are reportedly joining forces, while PH and Bersatu explore cooperation even as they clash in four constituencies. In Melaka this year, "friend" is a seat-by-seat classification. A man may share a stage with you in the morning and a ballot paper with you in the evening.

The forecast, in three flavours

Flavour one: a clear verdict. With fewer corners, vote-splitting has fewer places to hide, so one bloc may simply win comfortably. This is my modest favourite, held with the confidence of a man predicting rain in November.

Flavour two: the squeaker. Melaka has form. In 2021 the smallest winning margin was just 79 votes. If a few seats go that way again, expect recounts, strong tea and a returning officer with a very long evening ahead.

Flavour three: the hung assembly. Nobody reaches 15, and for a few days the state's most valuable asset is a phone that picks up. I rate this the least likely and the most entertaining.

What about the independents? Romantics hope for a lone kingmaker. History is unromantic. In 2021, every independent candidate lost their deposit. An independent who wins is a headline. An independent who loses a deposit is a Tuesday. https://thesun.my/news/malaysia-news/all-independent-putra-iman-candidates-lose-their-deposit-dh8584713/

The honest part. I have seen no reliable polling, alliances are fluid, and a single local issue, whether a drain, a road or a candidate's reputation, can overturn the grandest national theory in one seat. Turnout will also quietly decide more than any of us commentators will admit. Treat everything above as a way of thinking about the race, not a call. Be wary of any columnist, including this one, who sounds too sure.

My real prediction is the safe one: on Sunday morning of the 15th, every side will say the voters were wise, and at least two will say it through gritted teeth.

Vote, whichever way you lean. The cendol in Melaka with its best known gula, will taste the same either way.
