KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Melaka state government have formalised a strategic partnership to accelerate the rollout of the Smart Melaka City Initiative, marking a major step in the state’s digital transformation agenda.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), exchanged today and witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab. Rauf Yusoh, outlines joint efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure and enhance technology-driven public services.
The MoU was signed by MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Melaka State Secretary Datuk Wira Azhar Arshad.
Salim said the collaboration reflects MCMC’s commitment to supporting the state’s long-term digital goals under the Smart Melaka Blueprint 2035 (SMB2035).
“This partnership ensures that Melaka is equipped with the right digital foundations – from high-speed public Wi-Fi to comprehensive fibre networks and smart pole installations – all of which are vital for a resilient and future-ready smart city,” he said.
He added that integrated systems such as the Network Operation & Command Centre will play a key role in public safety, real-time traffic management and technology-based tourism solutions.
Under the agreement, both parties will cooperate to expand high-speed public Wi-Fi, deploy future-proof fibre optic networks, and widen coverage through the installation of smart poles across the state. The initiative is expected to improve digital service delivery, ease traffic congestion and strengthen disaster-risk management.
MCMC said the initiative will also help boost Melaka’s digital economy by supporting growth in tourism, retail, logistics and small and medium enterprises, creating a more favourable environment for investors.
“By enhancing the state’s digital ecosystem, we are laying the groundwork for Melaka to position itself as a globally competitive smart city,” MCMC added.
The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Secretary-General (Telecommunications Infrastructure) of the Communications Ministry, Mano Verabathran, and Melaka Exco for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan. - December 12, 2025
