THE dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN) is likely to be within the next three months, said Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.
He said, based on the current political situation, Melaka did not rule out the possibility of holding a State Election (PRN) by September, immediately after the Johor and Negeri Sembilan PRNs.
“The term of the Melaka State Assembly only ends at the end of this year, and during that period, dissolution can be at any time. “Therefore, before the time comes (the dissolution of the State Assembly), we will continue to carry out government affairs and serve the people until a date that will be officially announced,” he said today.
Melaka held a state election in November 2021 after a political crisis occurred when four State Assemblymen (ADUNs) withdrew their support for the state government led by the then Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
This caused the state government to lose its majority and led to the dissolution of the Melaka State Assembly on October 4, 2021.
The election results saw BN secure a landslide victory when it won 21 state assembly seats, thus forming a state government with a two-thirds majority, followed by Pakatan Harapan (PH) obtaining five seats and Perikatan Nasional (PN) gaining two seats.
Ab Rauf said that the Melaka PRN still needs to be held this year because it is a democratic process that is set according to the current administration's term.
Following that, he said, the state government is currently focusing on the administration and development of the state before entering the election period at the end of this year. "Our end date (for this term) is at the end of December, and it (PRN) will certainly be held before that date," he said.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Wira Ibrahim Durum, said that the Melaka DUN term is scheduled to end on December 27, and the state election must be held no later than 60 days after the dissolution date.
"However, the decision to dissolve the DUN early or wait until the end of the term is entirely subject to the Chief Minister, and all factors will of course be taken into account if the dissolution of the assembly is made earlier than the end of the term," he said. – June 22, 2026
