In the penultimate episode of this 2025 K-drama, protagonist Ko Gyeom discards the belongings of his deceased brother Jun. By the finale episode, he brings them all back and makes them a part of his home. The ending of Melo Movie successfully portrays how “life is a beautiful, magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish”.
An Oh Chung-hwan directorial, Netflix’s latest Korean drama Melo Movie is much more than just a romance. A poignant journey of loss, courage, growth and healing, the series skillfully blends moments of love and humour with the beauty of Seoul to draw viewers into the world of movie critic Ko Gyeom (played by Choi Woo-shik) and his one true love, movie director Kim Mu-bee (played by Park Bo-young).
The show is written by the highly accomplished Lee Na-eun, known for one of the best romantic K-dramas of all time, Our Beloved Summer (2021).
Talking about the message of Melo Movie, director Oh shared in an interview with Korea JoongAng Daily, “It isn’t necessarily about grand success stories, but about understanding failure, growth and setbacks. That’s the kind of vibe I aimed for, rather than teaching a great lesson. I hope this drama can provide small moments of success and comfort on difficult days.”

In the finale episode of the Korean drama, Gyeom struggles to move on after losing the most important person in his life, his elder brother Jun. Viewers see Gyeom sleeping in the car as he still can’t bring himself to go back into the home he once shared with Jun.
As the episode continues, Gyeom moves on with his daily life and sweeps his emotions under the carpet. Soon, during one of their long drives, Gyeom’s girlfriend Mu-bee senses his internal struggle with guilt and grief and shares one of the deepest secrets of her life. She admits that she is partly responsible for her father’s death. On her birthday, Mu-bee had argued with her father, who was away shooting for a movie and had urged him to return home if he loved her. That night her mother informed her that her father had passed away after meeting with an accident on his way home. Mu-bee’s confession of her long-standing guilt helps Ko Gyeom come clean to her about his feelings. “When I realised my brother had tried to end his life, I pretended like I had no idea. I stayed quiet until the end.. in case it was really because of me,” Gyeom eventually admits to Mu-bee.
Later, at his home, Gyeom sits in his brother’s favourite corner and indulges in his brother’s favourite liquor and cigarettes. In what could be one of Gyeom’s hallucinations, he ends up sharing a heartfelt conversation with his brother and urges him to visit him in his dreams sometimes. He also promises to “live a happy life, just like you wished.”
Do Ko Gyeom and Kim Mu-bee get their happy ending?

Yes, they do.
After promising his brother to lead a happy life, Gyeom informs Mu-bee of his decision to abandon his role as a movie critic. In the initial episodes of the series, Gyeom’s only goal was to watch all the movies ever made. However, after his brother’s accident, he is forced to take up the job of a movie critic. Towards the end of Melo Movie, Gyeom expresses that he is more curious about exploring the real world and not the world of movies.
The narrative then shifts to a year later. Kim Mu-bee’s movie Melody, which was initially shelved due to budgetary reasons, is released to great critical acclaim. On the other hand, Gyeom, who awaits the result of his latest interview for a travel company, spends his time on the sets of his girlfriend’s new movie.
Before the credits roll, Gyeom and Mu-bee sneak into an alleyway of the set and exchange sweet kisses, as Mu-bee’s voiceover shares, “Whenever I am with Ko Gyeom, we switch between genres. At times, it’s a tearjerker. At other times, it’s a heartwarming family movie. And the rest, a completely nonsensical action comedy. But still, the best one of all is… romance”.
Melo Movie ending explained: Do Hong Si-jun and Son Ju-a end up together?

No, they don’t.
Si-jun finds himself unable to move on from the day Ju-a broke up with him. The memories of Ju-a function as a constant reminder of his loss and plunge him into deeper grief with each passing day.
Once childhood sweethearts, when the duo meet again five years later, Ju-a confesses that she did turn their love story into ‘Melody’, her script that Mu-bee had decided to make into a movie. She also informs him that she wants him to compose the music for the movie.
Although Ju-a and Si-jun go on a few dates while working on the project, in the finale episode of the Netflix original, Si-jun acknowledges that they did love each other once but their time together is over. Ju-a kisses Si-jun one last time with tears in her eyes and the duo part ways forever.
