Memorial Day weekend travel may be disrupted by severe thunderstorms across the US this week.
On Thursday afternoon and evening thunderstorms will hit Interstate 95 — the main north-south freeway connecting the East Coast — in New Jersey and around the Washington DC metro area, the NWS forecasts.
The storms could bring heavy rain, hail and strong wind gusts as travelers embark on their holiday trips.
Meanwhile, travelers at airports across the US are already facing issues.
LaGuardia Airport in New York City is experiencing the highest number of delays in the US as of Thursday afternoon, according to FlightAware. 109 flights have been delayed and another nine canceled out of the New York airport as of 5 pm local time.
Boston Logan International Airport in Massachusetts is at 68 delays and six cancellations on Thursday afternoon as well.
A cold front may also bring thunderstorms to the Great Lakes region on Friday, potentially impacting air travel as holiday travel continues.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts this weekend will bring the heaviest Memorial Day travel in nearly 20 years, with some 43.8m people traveling at least 50 miles.
