MANILA, Philippines — Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Tuesday announced that its rates will increase this February by P0.2226 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) due to a rise in transmission and universal charges.

This means that the overall household rate is P13.1734 per kWh this month from P12.9508 per kWh in January.

For residential customers with a consumption of 200 kWh, Meralco said that this adjustment would translate to an increase of around P45 in their total electricity bill.

The power distributor also said that the P0.0770 per kWh increase in Universal Charge for Missionary Electrification (UCME) also contributed to the upward adjustment.

This was after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) approved of a new total rate of P0.2763 per kWh, higher than the P0.1993 per kWh implemented in the beginning of the February.
