KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has marked a significant milestone in its digital transformation with the launch of the country’s first Malaysia Digital (MD) Nexus at Merdeka 118.
The designation of the world’s second-tallest building as a premier digital hub represents a "tangible progress" in the government's mission to weave technology into the fabric of the nation’s economy and society.
Speaking at the launch earlier today, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that the digital agenda is now a primary engine for economic growth, designed to raise productivity, create high-skilled jobs, and attract quality investments.
To drive this vision, the Digital Ministry has identified six impactful areas for accelerated transformation this year, namely healthcare, transport, agriculture, SME digitalisation, law enforcement and government services.
"By focusing on these areas, we ensure that our digital ecosystem is not just growing, but is doing so with purpose and precision," Gobind said.
"This vision is centred on transforming Malaysia into a high-income nation and a regional leader in the digital economy."
A central theme of the announcement was Malaysia’s ambition to become a globally competitive AI Nation by 2030. Gobind emphasised that this involves more than just adopting new technology; it requires building a comprehensive ecosystem led by the National AI Office.
"This is about ensuring Malaysia is a producer, and not just a consumer, of AI technology," he added, noting that the MD Nexus initiative recognises strategic locations like Merdeka 118 that are equipped to host high-value digital businesses.
According to the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the MD Nexus status is awarded to premier business premises that provide high-quality environments for major digital players to expand.
Gobind stressed that this progress must be inclusive, reaching everyone from government-linked investment companies (GLICs) to local micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). With the digital economy projected to contribute 25.5 per cent to Malaysia's GDP by 2025, Gobind called on industry players to act as partners in national development.
"Merdeka 118 is not merely an iconic national landmark but a precinct with the potential to become a global focal point," said Gobind.
"It sets an important benchmark that we hope to build upon as more future-ready locations are developed nationwide."
The event was attended by senior leadership from Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), PNB Merdeka Ventures, MDEC, and Knight Frank Malaysia.
