German Chancellor Friedrich Merz early on Monday welcomed the framework agreement reached between the United States and Iran, saying it must now be implemented "with determination."
"The Strait of Hormuz must be opened to free navigation permanently and without any restrictions," Merz said in a statement.
He said further negotiations in the coming weeks must ensure that Iran "verifiably" ends its military nuclear programme.
Merz also said there must be no further attacks against Israel or other neighbours in the region.
The chancellor congratulated US President Donald Trump and the Iranian side on the "diplomatic breakthrough."
"The agreement has the potential to pave the way towards a reinvigorated global economy and a more secure Middle East," Merz said.
The German government would continue to contribute to and promote all diplomatic efforts to this end, he said, adding that Berlin was in close contact with the US, European partners and countries in the region.
