Messi donates €80,000 to rebuild wildfire-hit Madrid region

LONDON, Aug 5 - Football superstar Lionel Messi has donated €80,000 (about RM395,000) to help restore an area outside Madrid that was devastated by wildfires, the German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, revealed that the former Barcelona star had contributed the funds towards reconstruction efforts.

Writing on X, Díaz Ayuso said: "Leo Messi has donated €80,000 for the reconstruction of the Sierra Oeste de Madrid.

"I want to thank him and tell him that the people of Madrid hope to welcome him soon to give him the applause he deserves."

The region west of the Spanish capital has been severely affected by wildfires, with widespread damage to land and property, forcing residents to evacuate their homes.

Messi is widely recognised for his philanthropic work. He established the Leo Messi Foundation in 2007 to support children and young people through health, education and sport programmes.
