Leading up to this Thursday, families across Malaysia will no doubt be in the midst of making final preparations for the upcoming Holy Month of Ramadan, and the subsequent Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. With that said, those living in flood prone areas may also want to ensure that they have adequate supplies ready at hand, as the Meteorological Department of Malaysia has warned that heavy rains and strong winds may occur on the very first day of Ramadan (March 23rd).
Malaysians to expect heavy rains & strong winds from Thursday due to monsoon transition
Quoting MetMalaysia director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, local newspaper The New Straits Times reports that the inclement weather can be attributed to the fact that Malaysia will be entering what is known as the monsoon transition phase, which heralds the end of the monsoon season that started last November. It is expected to last until mid-May.
“During the monsoon transition phase, the country will receive weak wind from various directions that is conducive to the occurrence of thunderstorms. It usually brings heavy rain and strong winds for a short period of time.” he said.
The weather phenomenon can be most notably observed during the evenings and early hours at night in most West coast states, as well as interior parts of Peninsular Malaysia, west Sabah, as well as West and Central Sarawak.
There is a likelihood that flash floods may also occur as a consequence of these weather conditions, leading to damage on unstable structures.
