Social media is constantly evolving, and we’ve developed from Myspace and Friendster (good ol’ times), then to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
On Wednesday (July 5), Meta launched a new social media app – Threads and in just 4 hours, 5 million users have registered on the platform. At the time of writing, more than 30 million users have already signed on to Threads. Simply put, the new app by Meta is very much like Twitter where users can post pictures and videos that are up to 5 minutes long.
Not only that but they can also post what’s on their mind as much as they want, similar to Twitter.
By now, many business organisations and companies have also logged on to Threads to be part of the trend. Meta’s chief, Mark Zuckerberg said the idea of Threads is a “friendly rival” to Twitter, which has been bought by Elon Musk since October 2022. Mark also said that Threads will take some time to be bigger than Twitter, as reported by BBC.
“I think there should be a public conversation app with more than a billion users,” Mark said.
If you’re a Threads user, you should notice its uncanny resemblance to Twitter and we can’t help but think, is Musk going to be quiet about it? Well, not for long because the boss of Twitter has broken the silence following the circulation of Threads, as well as the rising number of users.
Threads = Threat to Twitter?
Yesterday (July 6), Mark received a letter from Twitter’s lawyer, Alex Spiro who claimed Meta hired former Twitter staff who still have access to Twitter’s trade secret and other highly confidential information.
“Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.”
Meta spokesperson has since responded to the allegations and said that no one in the company is a former employee of Twitter.
Musk also responded to this news via his tweet and said,
“Competition is fine, cheating is not.”
In the meantime, Musk’s old tweet has since recirculated online, where he “apologised” for firing employees on Twitter, and said that their skills can be applied somewhere else.
