Meta set to launch new camera-free smartglasses – here’s why

  • Meta is reportedly planning to launch a pair of camera-free smart glasses, codenamed Luna, following widespread privacy backlash over its current eyewear.
  • The existing camera-equipped glasses faced severe criticism for non-consensual filming, leading to bans in UK pubs, cinemas and courtrooms.
  • The new camera-less model will rely on six built-in microphones and an audio interface to interact with Meta's Muse AI agent, offering a slimmer design and longer battery life.
  • Meta is also introducing updates to its camera-equipped glasses to prevent users from covering or tampering with the LED recording light.
  • The new devices, along with new augmented reality goggles, are expected to be officially unveiled at the Meta Connect event on 23-24 September.
