MetMalaysia ends tsunami advisory for Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu after earlier warning of waves up to 0.4 metres

KUALA LUMPUR: The tsunami advisory issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) today for coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu, Sabah, has been lifted.

“The tsunami advisory issued at 8.36 am on June 8, 2026 was lifted at 12 noon on June 8, 2026,” MetMalaysia said in a Facebook post.

Earlier, the department had issued a statement warning that tsunami waves of up to 0.4 metres were expected to hit the coastal areas of the districts between 10.30 am and noon today, following a strong 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao, the Philippines, earlier this morning.

MetMalaysia said the termination of the tsunami advisory is its final update on the earthquake incident unless further developments arise.
