A TOTAL of RM141 million assets were seized in the country and RM15 million in overseas assets were detected by the MACC involving the misappropriation of sukuk funds for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley believed to belong to a 'Tan Sri' highway concessionaire.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, said the seized items involved individual accounts worth RM4.5 million, company accounts worth RM33 million, luxury condominiums and land worth RM24.5 million, luxury watches worth RM26 million, nine luxury cars worth RM7.65 million and jewellery and diamonds worth RM10 million.
According to him, other items seized were luxury handbags worth RM6 million, gold bars, gold statues and coins estimated to be worth RM3 million, and four horses worth RM400,000. Overseas assets estimated to be worth RM15 million are currently being traced by the MACC.
"In addition, the money was also used for alcoholic beverages and gambling activities amounting to RM25 million. The total value of assets and transactions that have been detected in the misuse of sukuk funds amounts to RM156 million.
"MACC is currently working with authorities such as Bank Negara and the Attorney General's Department to obtain information on assets and properties abroad," he told Harian Metro today.
Azam said so far the process of recording statements against the Tan Sri involved is still not complete and will continue on June 19.
"As of today, a total of 54 people have had their statements recorded to assist in the investigation," he said.
It was earlier reported that initial investigations found that the incident occurred between 2016 and 2020, where approved sukuk funds totaling approximately RM1.35 billion involved the misappropriation of false claims worth approximately RM360 million and RM416 million as well as loans from other bank facilities totaling RM50 million.
The highway project worth RM1.67 billion also failed to be completed within the specified period and the investigation also focused on the issue of corruption worth RM12 million that was paid to certain parties in return for helping to transfer money out and returned to the suspect.
Last month, the media reported that four individuals including a Datuk Seri were arrested on suspicion of making false claims totaling about RM360 million.
All suspects, consisting of three men and a woman aged between 50 and 70, were arrested while appearing to give statements at the MACC office.
The four suspects are suspected of submitting false claims worth about RM360 million using sukuk funds in a highway construction project in the Klang Valley worth about RM1.3 billion between 2016 and 2017. – June 14, 2025
