Mexico City: Schools closed and home office for World Cup start

School children will have the day off and civil servants have been asked to work at home in order to prevent traffic chaos when the football World Cup kicks off on Thursday at Azteka Stadium.

Co-hosts Mexico play South Africa in the tournament opener in the Mexican capital, and the government wants to reduce the notorious traffic as much as possible around the big occasion.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has signed a decree under which there will be no classes at schools and universities and private sector companies have been asked to allow their staff to work from home.

Doctors, police officers and employees in critical infrastructure are meanwhile among those to work in a normal way.

The opening ceremony and match take place around mid-day in Mexico City. The ceremony including famous singer Shakira starts at 11.30am (1730 GMT) and the opening match kicks off at 1pm (1900 GMT).
