Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticises US visa revocations as politically motivated intervention.

MEXICO CITY: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticised the United States on Friday for revoking visas of politicians including the son of her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran, who until last May was a senior member of the ruling Morena party, published an open letter to President Donald Trump on Thursday attacking the revoking of his visa.

Without referring to his specific case, Sheinbaum told reporters that recent US visa denials represented “a desire to intervene” in Mexico that was politically motivated.

Lopez Beltran accused US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of ordering the visa revocation.

A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Mexico told AFP that visa records were confidential and “we cannot discuss the details of individual visa cases.”

The United States has withheld or denied visas of numerous Mexican politicians since 2025, including mayors and governors.

Local media have reported on potential ties between those officials and organised crime gangs.
