MG (SAIC Motor Malaysia) has held a preview session for their newest entrant to grace their portfolio, the S5 EV - a fully-electric SUV contender that’s set make go up against market staples such as the BYD Atto 3, Chery Omoda E5, and the Proton eMAS 7, though the latter is labelled as a C-segment EV. MG are lobbing an estimated price of RM115,000.
With a launch confirmed and imminent, the only question remains exactly when such a premiere will take place with some saying the company is gearing for one at the Malaysian Auto Show next month. There are 2 variants on the way, one with a 49kWh battery and the other, better specified version, with a 62kWh pack.

Range for the 49kWh is rated as 340km on the WLTP cycle while the variant with a beefier battery receives a stated range of 430km. Powertrains for both are supplied by a single rear-mounted electric motor rear-wheel drive putting out 170PS and 250Nm.
MG boasts a best-in-class DC charging rate of 150kW but as yet an undisclosed AC charging rate. V2L or vehicle-to-load capability is also a standard feature, with a maximum output of 6.6kWh. Also standard across both variants is a pretty robust ADAS suite and 7 airbags.

In terms of the exterior, we do see quite a few design inspirations from various cars, most of which borrow from MG’s current lineup, though we do see cues from Audi, KIA, and even some flashes of the eMAS 7. Of course, this is all subjective.
Colour options include 5 shades; Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red, and Elegant Latte which, as we understand, is exclusive to the higher-end variant.

Though a more thorough breakdown of the equipment levels will be forthcoming when the car does launch, we can confirm a few things that will be exclusive to the more expensive variant with 62kWh battery - 18-inch alloys, panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera system, owered tailgate, leather/fabric combination seats, heated steering wheel, power-adjust driver’s seat, 6 speakers audio system, and automatic wipers.
Also equipped as standard is a 12-8-inch central infotainment touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in addition to native app support for Spotify, Tiktok, and even Youtube. Supplementing this is a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display.

Before long, the S5 EV will join the ranks of the MG4, MG5, MG HS, and Cyberster as part of the brand’s offensive in the Malaysian market with a pretty attractive starting price, handsome design, and pretty robust specification. We’re looking forward to it!
