A heated political exchange has erupted following remarks by PAS Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who linked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Russia with the long-standing MH17 tragedy. His remarks have drawn strong criticism from the Prime Minister’s political secretary, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, who denounced the move as an act of political opportunism.
The issue arose after Ahmad Fadhli suggested that Anwar should use his ongoing visit to Russia to confront Moscow about the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukrainian airspace. The timing of his remarks coincided with the release of a new report by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which reportedly holds Russia accountable for violating the 1944 Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Muhammad Kamil, who also serves as Deputy Chief of PKR Youth, rejected the notion that the Prime Minister’s trip had any connection to the ICAO findings. He pointed out that the official invitation to visit Moscow had been issued months in advance and had already been discussed during Anwar’s previous trip to Vladivostok. According to him, attempts to link the PM's diplomatic mission to the recent ICAO report ignore the broader context and risk feeding into the geopolitical agendas of larger powers.
Kamil emphasized that Malaysia has remained consistent in its stance regarding justice for MH17 victims and their families. He described Malaysia’s diplomatic efforts as thoughtful and firm, insisting that the government would not be swayed by provocations or efforts to derail its foreign policy goals. He also cautioned against allowing emotionally charged issues like MH17 to be manipulated for domestic political advantage.
His rebuttal comes amid renewed international pressure, with the Netherlands and Australia pushing ICAO to initiate formal discussions with Russia over the MH17 case. Despite this, Malaysia’s leadership maintains that its focus remains on securing justice through lawful and diplomatic means, rather than turning a tragedy into a political battleground.
The Prime Minister is currently in Moscow on a four-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation. Critics of Ahmad Fadhli’s statement argue that such visits should be seen as opportunities for constructive engagement rather than occasions for political posturing.
The debate highlights the sensitivity surrounding the MH17 tragedy and reinforces the need for national leaders to handle such issues with care, respect, and strategic foresight.
