KUALA LUMPUR – PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, has disclosed that MIC has submitted an application to join the coalition.
Speaking at a press conference, Bersatu president clarified that the decision on the application will be made collectively during the upcoming PN Supreme Council meeting, Sinar Harian reported
He also highlighted that the leadership of all PN component parties is, in principle, supportive of MIC’s inclusion into the alliance.
"I have informed the president and secretary-general of MIC that once the Sabah State Election is over, we will hold a meeting and discuss in detail the application made by MIC," he said.
"The final decision will be made when the PN Supreme Council holds a meeting to review the application, and thereafter, we will officially announce the decision regarding MIC's membership in PN."
At its 79th annual general assembly earlier this month, delegates unanimously passed a resolution to quit BN, citing the coalition’s diminishing relevance and MIC’s marginalisation within its ranks.
The motion was tabled by deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan, who argued that BN “does not work anymore” and urged the party to explore new alliances, including Perikatan Nasional (PN).
MIC president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran and the Central Working Committee (CWC) have been given full authority to decide the party’s next course of action. While the resolution signals a clear intent to break away, MIC has yet to formally announce its departure.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi responded by saying the coalition would accept MIC’s decision “with an open and sincere heart,” stressing that it was the party’s prerogative to determine its future.
Despite the looming exit, MIC pledged to continue supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership until the end of his mandate, regardless of coalition alignment.
Political analysts note that MIC’s move underscores the unraveling of BN’s original multi-ethnic model, once the backbone of Malaysia’s political stability. They caution, however, that MIC faces an uphill battle to regain relevance, with its electoral base having shrunk significantly since 2008. - November 30, 2025
