Michael Carrick avoids sack for now and will take charge of Man United game with Chelsea

Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for this week after the club hierarchy decided against sacking him.

The 45-year-old, whose position was under threat after going eight games without a win, has kept his job despite their devastating run.

United are believed to have started considering replacements for Carrick but for now sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada have not pulled the trigger and are giving him the chance to halt the slump and get their season back on track.

Carrick took training as usual on Tuesday as he prepares for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.

He had come in to United’s Carrington training ground on Monday, when the players had a day off, while Berrada and Wilcox were there as well.

United have suffered heavy defeats in their last two games, losing 4-1 to Como and 3-0 to Bournemouth.

Carrick dropped his captain Bruno Fernandes for the Bournemouth game after the Portugal international criticised his tactics in Italy and didn’t bring him off the bench.

Carrick’s name was sung by United supporters after the loss to Bournemouth, even as they booed the players and directed chants at Wilcox and co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family.

If Carrick goes, possible replacements could include Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte.

After Chelsea, United host Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa before the international break.
