Michael Douglas has said it’s probably for the best that his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, doesn’t want to read his new memoir.
The two-time Oscar winner was asked during a Thursday interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live about his wife’s Today interview earlier that day, in which she revealed she had “no intention” of reading his book, which details his affair with Kathleen Turner during his previous marriage 40 years ago.
“I wondered if you felt that was for the best,” Kimmel asked on Thursday, to which Douglas replied, laughing: “Oh, yeah.”
“Look, I mean, we got a 25-year age difference,” Douglas explained.
“I opened up and mentioned the book and exposed the fact that Kathleen Turner and I had an affair when we were making Romancing the Stone. Catherine was seven years old at the time and wouldn’t know her husband for 25 years ahead,” he added.
He continued: “I think she’s had to accept the fact that having this kind of age difference, you may have had a life before you ever seen her for the first time.”
Kimmel joked that Zeta-Jones thought Douglas “was a virgin” before they got married.
“Correct,” Douglas replied. “She told you that?”
In One Helluva Ride, Douglas writes about his brief split from Zeta-Jones in 2013 after they had been married for 13 years, saying that he “never gave up hope that we would reconcile.”
He also writes about debauched parties in New York City, and his affair with Turner, and an affair with his Basic Instinct co-star Jeanne Tripplehorn. During both affairs, he was married to Diandra Luker, his first wife and the mother of his son Cameron.
Zeta-Jones, who married Douglas in 2000, said during a Thursday interview that she had no plans to read her husband’s memoir.

She said that firstly, she didn’t have much time between shooting two new series, Netflix’s Wednesday and the AMC+ series Kill Jackie.
“And as much as I love my husband, when I’m tired at night, I have no intention of reading about him. At all,” she added.
While she doesn’t plan on reading it, she said, “Everyone else should.”
Speaking about his decision to disclose his affairs in the book, Douglas told Kimmel: “It was part of my life and these were important people.”
“Especially Kathleen; we did three pictures together. I mean, Romancing the Stone, it was extraordinary,” he added.
Douglas and Turner began a secret relationship while filming the 1984 adventure movie in Mexico, despite both of them previously denying it. The romance ended when his wife visited the set and brought their son, and reminded Turner that they were still married.
When Douglas’s confession about the affair made headlines last week, she told People in a statement: “Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael, and I look forward to enjoying the book.”
