Michelle Pfeiffer has denied she’s quitting movies.
The 68-year-old Batman Returns actor made her name with roles in Grease 2 and Scarface in the early 1980s, but has more recently been focused on television with acclaimed performances in Margo’s Got Money Troubles and The Madison.
She was nominated for an Emmy for her turn in the former show, and sparked speculation she might never return to the big screen when she told fellow nominees at an industry event: “I never want to star in another movie, I swear to God. I only want to do ensemble pieces. It’s so much more fun, I love it so much.”
However, speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show this week, Pfeiffer clarified that the comment was meant in jest.
“No, I mean, it’s the most ridiculous thing,” she said. “They’re always saying that I’m retiring. Where does it say that I’m retiring? No, no. All I said was that I really love working with an ensemble cast.”
She went on to acknowledge that she quickly realized how her comments could be interpreted, remarking: “I knew the minute it came out of my mouth.”
Pfeiffer added: “I said something about ‘I never want to star in another movie,’ and they took that out of context. Of course I want to star in another movie, but I’ve done three ensemble pieces [recently]. I did Oh. What. Fun. and The Madison and then Margo.”
In Margo’s Got Money Troubles, created by Pfeiffer’s real-life husband, David E Kelley, she plays the mother of Elle Fanning’s college dropout, who signs up to OnlyFans to support herself and her new baby financially. Nicole Kidman also appears in the comedy show.
Meanwhile, in The Madison – from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan – she plays the matriarch of a family who relocates from New York City to a valley in southwest Montana after a tragedy.
At the upcoming Emmys, which are due to take place September 14, Pfeiffer is nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category, placing her in competition with Dale Dickey of Widow’s Bay, Hannah Einbinder of Hacks, Janelle James of Abbott Elementary, Kate O’Flynn of Widow’s Bay, Megan Stalter of Hacks and Jessica Williams of Shrinking.
Medical drama The Pitt received the most Emmy nominations with a whopping 25, closely followed by Widow’s Bay. The ceremony will be hosted by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay.
