Microsoft and Asus partnered up last year to launch the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X set of handheld gaming consoles. Unlike other Windows-based consoles before them, these two were unique in that they brought with it a full screen Xbox experience, making them more optimised for gaming rather than general computing.

Updates since its launch late last year have only made the ROG Xbox Ally series better for gamers, and now Microsoft’s latest updates could be the biggest yet. They’ve announced a number of new features coming to the handheld consoles for an even better experience.

The first major update is for gamers who use the ROG Xbox Ally both on the go and on the couch. When docked, the ROG Xbox Ally series will automatically default to the big screen and turn off the handheld display. This comes with optimised settings for the big screen too, such as resolution, refresh rate and HDR tweaks. Supported smart TVs in particular will now automatically turn on gaming features too such as auto low latency mode or gaming mode. And if you’re using the ROG Bulwark or ROG 100W Charger Dock, you’ll also unlock variable refresh rate for smoother gameplay.

That’s not even all the updates coming to docked gamers. When docked, you can now adjust display settings directly from the Game Bar via your controller. The new Display Widget combines controls for your resolution, refresh rate and projection mode all into one streamlined, console-like experience so that you’ll never have to leave your couch.

Similarly, when paired with an Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller, the built-in controllers on the Xbox Ally are disabled, and your controller will default to the main one. Gamepad Cursor meanwhile adds provides a better scrolling and navigating experience when using your controller outside of gaming.

On top of that, docked gamers will soon be finally able to enjoy Automatic Super Resolution, or Auto SR for short. The long awaited feature is finally making its way to the preview branch for Xbox Insiders, and Insiders can try it out and help Microsoft test and refine the feature. Microsoft claims that Auto SR will be able to help deliver 1440p-like detail along with smoother framerates on larger screens, and Insiders who have it will also see the tool straight from their Game Bar.

Other non-docked updates meanwhile include support for Super Wideband Stereo Audio via Bluetooth LE Audio on the Xbox Ally series, allowing gamers to enjoy high fidelity stereo in-game. There’s also enhanced vibration for a more refined haptic experience, along with the option to add more game launchers and even custom apps such as Spotify or streaming apps right into the Xbox PC app so that you can access them without heading into desktop mode.

Other than Auto SR, the other features introduced today by Microsoft should be rolling out now to all ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X users around the world. You’ll want to check for updates from your Armory Crate SE app, Xbox PC app and Game Bar tool to ensure you get to enjoy all of the new features from Microsoft on your handheld.
