- Midwives Glenys Wood and Kathryn Duignan have been struck off the nursing register following an investigation into the death of a baby at King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
- The Nursing and Midwifery Council panel heard that a 41-weeks-pregnant woman suffering from vaginal bleeding was left unassessed in a side room for 37 minutes after arriving at the triage unit in September 2023.
- A colleague eventually assessed the patient at 1.42am and recognised a medical emergency caused by a placental abruption, but the delayed response meant the baby suffered a fatal brain injury due to lack of oxygen.
- A July 2024 inquest established that neglect contributed to the baby's death, concluding that he would have ‘on balance’ survived had the mother been assessed on arrival and given an emergency Caesarean section by 1.25am rather than 2.02am.
- The panel found both midwives failed to respond to the family's cries for help and refused to engage with the NMC proceedings, prompting the decision to permanently remove them from the register.
