A middle-aged widow, identified as Shakuntala alias Suman, allegedly threw her three children–two sons and a daughter–into a canal near Morinda on Monday evening.

Police recovered the bodies of Tanvi (6) and Tapish (10) late on Monday night, while the search for the third child, Nitin (4), was continuing till the filing of this report.

Family members gathered outside the Mataur police station in Mohali said the woman’s husband, Kamal, had died by suicide a few months ago.

Police have detained the woman and are questioning her to ascertain the motive behind the alleged act.

Investigators are also probing whether she acted alone or if another person accompanied her and the children at the time of the incident.

The police are further verifying claims made by the woman’s brother that she had been suffering from mental health issues following her husband’s death. Officials said all aspects of the case are being investigated.

Meanwhile, the grieving grandmother of the deceased children demanded justice and strict action against the accused.
