The story of the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) is sixty decades old. Established in 1966, it responded to the nation's growth needs after Merdeka (independence). It is a Malaysian story of people involved in the art and science of management, aspirations and ideas, and triumphs in a changing kaleidoscopic environment and mirrors the story of the nation itself. In the words of the Institute's first newsletter, MIM is dedicated “to spreading and promoting education, research and training in management skills” and “to represent the united voice of Malaysian management in national and international forums of managers”. In a nutshell, its mission to become “The recognized national body for management in Malaysia.” Allahyarham (late) Tun Ismail bin Mohamad Ali, the Governor of Bank Negara (1962-1980), agreed to serve as the Institute's first President. He also served as one of the founding Governors of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Manila.
I was proud to serve as MIM General Council in early 2000s, and as CEO in 2013-2014 during the tenure of Allahyarham Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar as MIM President. At 60, MIM has passed many milestones, both big and small. The Institute that the world sees today would not have been born without the foresights of its founders or its name respected throughout without the wisdom and acumen of its torchbearers. Its borders would not have enlarged without the diligence of its countless managers & staffers, intertwined with the emotional energy that defines all human hearts.
It is with a sense of joyful pride that I record my heartiest felicitations to former senior staff, Shamsul Bahari bin Omar & wife, Jaimah binti Marjan for inviting former MIM employees to attend the wedding reception of their son Mohammad Al-Azeem with Fatin Batrisyia at Nakhoda Three Empire KL last weekend. It was their great effort that enable us to gather & reflect pleasant memories with MIM. In trying to assess what the Institute has in fact achieved over the course of 60 years, many would agree that thousands have been touched by MIM training, consultancy and conferences.
