Defence Ministry to convert reserve land and former shooting ranges into SASaR housing sites to provide affordable homes for armed forces personnel.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Defence is prepared to release reserve land and former shooting ranges nationwide for the Satu Anggota Satu Rumah (SASaR) housing programme.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this initiative safeguards the welfare of Malaysian Armed Forces personnel. He explained that many ministry-owned lands are now surrounded by public housing, making their original function as shooting ranges unsuitable.
“If immediate steps were not taken to change the status of the affected land, there was a risk that these assets could be taken over by other parties for alternative development purposes,” he said.
Mohamed Khaled said reserve land in Pahang and Penang, along with two former shooting ranges, have been identified for conversion. He stated it was appropriate to convert suitable land into SASaR housing projects so more personnel can own homes.
The minister was speaking at the handover ceremony for the fully completed SASaR Residensi Sateria in Sungai Besi. He described the project, involving 3,500 eligible recipients, as a crucial government intervention.
“The prices offered through this project are all at affordable prices, around RM150,000 to RM250,000,” he said. He added that without such intervention, it would be impossible for personnel to own such homes at prices significantly below market value.
Mohamed Khaled said similar projects are being implemented at Wardieburn Camp and in the Setapak area. He assured that through Housing Blueprint 3.0, the ministry would monitor all planned projects to ensure timely completion.
“A home is where life is built, where love, family values and a sense of togetherness are nurtured,” he said. Providing housing remains one of the ministry’s most important agendas, he concluded.
