THE International Day for the Elimination against Racism, marked today, is a vital occasion in the global effort to uphold social justice principles, said Minister of Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.
He said this day is not only a commemoration of the ongoing fight against racial discrimination but also a testament to the unwavering commitment of the global community to eradicate racism, racial insults, and prejudices that threaten social harmony.
"Malaysia, as a nation rich in diversity of races, religions, and cultures, has always placed great importance on unity and mutual respect. This diversity is a crucial asset in ensuring the country's stability and continued progress," said the Minister during the launch of the Malaysia Racism Report 2024.
To strengthen national unity, Aaron explained that the Ministry of National Unity (KPN) has introduced the National Unity Policy, a strategic framework aimed at fostering a harmonious and inclusive society. The policy adopts a new approach under the banner of "Harmony in Diversity and the Building of a Progressive Nation-State."
"The 2022 National Unity Index (IPNas) recorded a score of 0.629, indicating that national unity is at a moderate and controlled level," he said.
He also highlighted ten social deficits that require attention, including ethnicity, religion, social class, education, language, generational gaps, gender, politics, federalism, and the urban-rural divide.
Aaron further urged Malaysians to reject prejudice, negative stereotypes, and all forms of racial or religious injustice, as any kind of discrimination has no place in the country.
"I want to emphasize that discrimination, in any form, should never exist in our society. It only undermines the foundation of unity we have worked hard to build," he stated.
On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Minister called on everyone to redouble their efforts in building a united, inclusive, and harmonious Malaysia, stating, "Together, let us ensure that future generations inherit a nation free from all forms of discrimination." - March 21, 2025
