Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today provided Tabung Kasih@HAWANA assistance to Mohd Airulrezal Amirudin, a cameraman for Malaysia Gazette (MG), to help ease his financial burden following a road accident while on duty last month.

Mohd Airulrezal, 42, was injured during an integrated law enforcement operation on June 24, resulting in shoulder and spinal fractures. His recovery is expected to take at least nine months before he can resume work.

Speaking at the event, Fahmi expressed his concern for the incident and emphasized the importance of the welfare of media professionals, including photographers and cameramen. He assured them that their safety and well-being were high on his list of priorities.

When questioned about the necessity for enforcement agencies to establish standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety of media personnel during operations, Fahmi stated that he would advocate for such measures if needed.

Also present at the event were Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, the chief executive officer of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), and Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, the editor-in-chief.

Mohd Airulrezal shared that the accident has significantly impacted his daily life, leaving him largely dependent on his wife for support. Before joining MG in June 2023, he worked as a cameraman at Bernama from 2009 to 2019 and Astro Awani from 2019 to 2023.

He is one of 111 media practitioners who have received donations from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA since its inception in April of the previous year. In addition to financial aid, he received donations in the form of goods from Pakaian Hari-Hari and AEON Big.

Tabung Kasih@HAWANA, established in conjunction with the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2023 celebration, aims to support journalists and media personnel who are in need, whether they are still in service, retired, elderly, or facing hardship. This initiative by the Ministry of Communications is implemented through Bernama.

The minister's gesture and the ongoing support from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA highlight the continued commitment to ensuring the well-being of those in the media industry, acknowledging the crucial role they play in covering important events and delivering news to the public.
