The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has concluded an interim investigation into the awarding of the Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) pilot project contract by the Selangor government to a company owned by the husband of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. The investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki announced the findings, stating that the interim investigation did not uncover any misconduct, leading the commission to decide against pursuing the case further. He noted that continued media attention on the issue could negatively impact both parties involved.
"If a politician believes there is a moral issue here, that is their perspective. I am neither a politician nor a motivational expert, so I will not comment on such matters," Azam stated during the Executive Talk Editor Media Online programme.
This statement comes after criticism from some politicians who suggested that potential abuses of power may have been overlooked by the MACC. Despite Azam’s clarification that the investigation did not link Hannah Yeoh to the contract award, the controversy has persisted.
Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd, the company owned by Hannah Yeoh’s husband, was one of two companies selected for the DRT pilot project. This initiative by the Selangor state government aims to enhance public transportation and mobility within the region.
In response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's comment that the authorities should be allowed to investigate the contract award issue, Azam expressed his willingness to personally brief the Prime Minister on the case details. "As the Prime Minister indicated, this matter should be handled by the authorities. Repeated questions have been directed at him regarding this issue. This is not a directive from the Prime Minister, and any further investigation will be at the discretion of the MACC," Azam elaborated.
The DRT pilot project is an important initiative aimed at improving public transport services in Selangor, a state that faces significant mobility challenges. The project’s goal is to create a more responsive and efficient public transportation system to better serve the needs of the community.
This development highlights the ongoing scrutiny faced by public officials and their families, particularly in matters involving government contracts and potential conflicts of interest. The MACC’s decision to not pursue further investigation underscores the importance of evidence-based conclusions in maintaining public trust in anti-corruption efforts.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the involved parties will navigate the public and political ramifications of the investigation's findings. The MACC's transparency in handling the case and their commitment to upholding integrity in public service are crucial in addressing public concerns and maintaining confidence in the government’s commitment to anti-corruption measures.
