THE Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has unveiled an expanded fertility assistance initiative expected to benefit 47,000 couples seeking to conceive, as the government intensifies efforts to improve access to reproductive healthcare and infertility treatment.
The programme, known as the Fertility Treatment Assistance and Infertility Advocacy Programme (BuAI), includes government funding for intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment for eligible couples.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the initiative, launched under the slogan “Earlier Is Better”, was designed to support couples hoping to build families amid rising infertility challenges.
“Until now, more than 373,000 subfertility cases have been handled, with 6,513 successful pregnancies achieved.
“Each one carries a story of hope becoming reality, a story of tears turning into happiness,” she said during her speech at the National Mother’s Day celebration held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, attended the event as royal guest of honour.
Nancy said the initiative reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening access to affordable and high-quality fertility services across the country.
She also announced that development of a National Subfertility Registry database would begin this year to support the establishment of the National Subfertility Centre in Shah Alam, Selangor, which is expected to begin operations by 2030.
According to the minister, the registry system would play a key role in enabling the government to better plan, monitor and improve fertility services through a more integrated and effective national framework.
The ministry said the programme formed part of wider efforts to address fertility and reproductive health challenges faced by Malaysian couples, while also increasing public awareness surrounding infertility and early treatment intervention. - May 10, 2026
