MINISTER of Communications, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, inaugurated the 2026 celebration of Internet Safety Day (HKI 2026) today at the Tasik Titiwangsa Park, highlighting the continued importance of safeguarding Malaysia’s digital ecosystem.
Organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the event serves as a platform uniting government, industry, communities, and families to foster a resilient and informed digital society.
“Internet Safety Day is more than a symbolic observance. It reinforces our shared responsibility to ensure children, adolescents, and families navigate the online world safely, ethically, and responsibly,” Fahmi Fadzil said.
The event featured a wide range of activities designed to educate, prevent risks, and encourage public engagement.
Participants were introduced to practical tools for parental controls, digital account protection, and strategies to avoid online scams.
Interactive exhibition booths, digital learning programmes, e-sports, and cyber-safety-themed games drew participation across generations, extending the reach of key online safety messages to the wider community.
In conjunction with the celebrations, the Internet Safe Campaign 2026 was officially launched. Building on the initiative from 2025, the campaign aims to train one million Malaysians this year in essential knowledge and skills for safe online behaviour.
HKI 2026 also marks a milestone in Malaysia’s ongoing regulatory and legal reforms.
Since 1 January 2026, the Online Safety Act 2025 (Akta Keselamatan Dalam Talian 2025, ONSA) has been enforced, alongside new age restrictions for social media account registration for individuals under 16, implemented via a regulatory sandbox approach.
“This integrated strategy demonstrates our continuous commitment to managing the digital ecosystem holistically, encompassing enforcement, platform compliance, user education, and public awareness,” Fahmi added.
The inauguration was attended by key figures including the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications, Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah; MCMC Chairman, Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din; Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Datuk Seri TPr Fadlun Mak Ujud; strategic partners; and industry stakeholders.
The 2026 celebration underscores Malaysia’s determination to advance digital safety, foster informed usage of online platforms, and protect the next generation in an increasingly connected world. - February 8, 2026
