The Ministry of Defence has affirmed its commitment to ensuring that investigations into abuse of power within the Malaysian Armed Forces are conducted with utmost transparency and adherence to principles of justice and accountability, taking into consideration the separation of powers.

Deputy Minister Adly Zahari emphasized that the ministry has established its own rigorous process and standard operating procedures (SOP) to address issues of misconduct and abuse, irrespective of the rank of the individuals involved. He stressed the importance of impartial internal investigations in responding to reports, whether they originate internally or externally, including those initiated through police reports.

“We prioritize the integrity of our investigations, especially when allegations involve specific officials. Suspending the authority of implicated individuals allows for independent and thorough investigations, while also providing necessary support for any affected parties to recover from potential trauma,” Adly stated during a press briefing at the Alor Gajah Parliament Rahmah Carnival.

Recent media coverage highlighted allegations of abuse of power and use of force by a senior Malaysian Army officer in Sarawak against another officer. The Malaysian Army (TDM) acknowledged receiving a police report regarding the incident, which occurred during training and subsequently garnered attention on social media platforms. In response, the senior official in question has been relieved of duties to facilitate a transparent and comprehensive investigation by the TDM.

Adly reiterated the Ministry of Defence's commitment to addressing such matters with openness and accountability. He emphasized that the ministry welcomes all reports and remains dedicated to conducting thorough internal investigations to address any issues raised. Additionally, he emphasized that individuals dissatisfied with investigation outcomes have recourse to appeal within the ministry or pursue alternative avenues, including engaging with the Armed Forces chief or other relevant authorities.

“From the outset, our approach has been to address reports promptly and thoroughly. Should any party feel unsatisfied with investigation outcomes, there are avenues available for recourse, including mechanisms that respect the separation of powers within the Armed Forces,” Adly concluded.
