Many a time, we’re always told that education is the answer to someone’s future.

However, in this society, there are many skilled workers who do not need formal education but rely on their carefully-honed skills.

The Youth and Sports Ministry, through the Youth and Sports Skills Training Institute (ILKBS), is organising a programme called skills for life to empower youths with additional skills.

According to BERNAMA, minister Hannah Yeoh has said that this programme will be held during weekends in February and March, using the Do It Yourself method.

“The Skills for Life programme offers basic skills training to the community, especially youths from the B40 and M40 groups, as well as at-risk and minority youths and those who are already working aged 40 and below.”

The minister also mentioned on Twitter, “22 weekend classes will be provided across ILKBN for basic skills like electrical maintenance, basic vehicle and air conditioning repairs, hairstyling, tailoring and smartphone photography.”

Hannah Yeoh added that if youths want to participate in this programme, they can obtain any information by accessing the ministry’s Facebook page. The price of the course is set at a low RM10 to RM30 so that it is accessible for all.

As for her future plans, she intends to set up language courses for youths who are interested.

“The next step is for the youths to master languages such as English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, so that when these youths go for an interview to get a job or promotion, they have new skills.”

This is certainly a good move. Skills are forever and when used properly, they can turn a person’s life around. We hope that youths will be able to take advantage of this and sign up for the program.
