Minor earthquake shakes northern Thailand, no damage reported

A SHALLOW magnitude 2.4 earthquake struck Thailand's northern province of Phayao on Friday afternoon, prompting local authorities to conduct inspections after residents reported feeling brief tremors across parts of Dok Kham Tai district.

According to the Geohazard Operations Centre under the Department of Mineral Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the earthquake occurred at 3.05pm local time in Sawang Arom subdistrict at a depth of just one kilometre.

The department said the tremor was caused by movement along the Phayao Fault Group, a north-south fault system with a slight north-westerly orientation, and classified the event as normal faulting.

Residents in Dok Kham Tai district, particularly in Dok Kham Tai and Sawang Arom subdistricts, reported feeling light shaking that subsided within moments.

Following the earthquake, Phayao Governor Ornapa Lohweera directed the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office to work with district officials, local administrative organisations and other relevant agencies to assess the situation and monitor areas considered vulnerable to seismic activity.

Emergency personnel were deployed to inspect affected locations, evaluate any potential impact and provide reassurance to local communities while maintaining close surveillance of the situation.

Authorities confirmed that the earthquake caused no injuries and no damage to homes, government buildings, roads, bridges or public utilities.

Disaster management officials said monitoring would continue in coordination with geological agencies and other relevant authorities, while advising residents to remain calm and follow official updates should further seismic activity occur. - July 11, 2026
