Miri police nab man who left explosive-like items in mosque

POLICE in Miri have arrested a local middle-aged man after he was alleged to have left two wired items inside a mosque that resembled home-made explosive devices.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon at the Senadin mosque located about 20 km north of Miri city.

The man was arrested shortly after and placed under remand today.

Miri police chief Alexson Naga Chabu said police deployed a bomb disposal squad to the mosque and evacuated the place as a precaution after receiving a distress call.

"The two suspicious items were left inside the mosque and created a panic.

"Our bomb disposal unit rushed to the scene and evacuated the area and carried out a thorough check on the items found and confirmed they are not explosives.

"The man arrested for leaving the items is being investigated for criminal intimidation and creating religious disharmony," he said in a statement.

Police are trying to find out the motives behind his actions. - November 18, 2024
