MIRI, Jan 18 ― The crime index for Miri District showed a 51 per cent decline last year compared to 2021, said Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu.

He said 277 crime cases were reported in the district last year, which was a drop of 292 cases compared to the 569 cases reported in 2021.

“Overall, the crime and security situation in Miri district is under control,” he said today during the Miri police headquarters’ first monthly assembly for 2023.

Alexson said Miri police made 849 arrests last year for drug abuse compared to 563 in 2021.

“The 50.7 per cent increase shows the seriousness of the Miri police in combating the drug issue, which is the country’s number one enemy,” he said.

He added the police are prepared to face weather changes during the northeast monsoon, where continuous heavy rain may result in flooding in some areas of the district.

“Monitoring will be carried out optimally for security control between agencies and humanitarian aid,” he said.

He also called on the Miri folk going away for Chinese New Year to notify a nearby police station so that the police can conduct patrols and monitoring to prevent housebreakings.

During the assembly, 55 police of various ranks received certificates of appreciation for their part in solving crimes. ― Borneo Post
