A WOMAN’S claim that she was the victim of an armed robbery in Miri has collapsed after police concluded that the incident she reported did not take place and that she had fabricated the entire account.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee said the 29-year-old local woman lodged a police report at 1.58am on May 28, alleging that she had been robbed by four men travelling in a four-wheel-drive vehicle near Miri Gospel Chapel, Pujut, at around 10pm the previous night.
According to her report, she had stopped at the roadside location to relieve herself before being approached by suspects who allegedly pointed a firearm at her stomach.
“The victim claimed that a gold necklace, gold ring, gold bracelet and RM350 in cash belonging to her were taken by the suspects, with total losses estimated at RM3,130,” he said in a statement.
Following the report, police opened an investigation under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for robbery and armed robbery, with the Criminal Investigation Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters conducting a comprehensive inquiry.
However, investigators later uncovered multiple inconsistencies and gaps in the complainant’s statements during the course of their investigation.
“Intelligence and further investigations conducted successfully found evidence that the reported robbery incident did not exist.
“Following the evidence obtained, the complainant eventually admitted that the police report made was untrue and that all the jewellery and cash allegedly stolen were found in her own possession,” he said.
Following the admission, police lodged a separate report against the woman for intentionally providing false information to a public servant.
The case is now being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.
Police have reminded the public that making false police reports is a serious offence and urged individuals not to misuse law enforcement resources for personal gain or other improper purposes. - June 2, 2026
