Misdirected patriotism: Malaysian flag should be respected, not politicised, says Mujahid

MISUNDERSTANDINGS surrounding the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang—whether intentional or accidental—must be addressed in the spirit of mutual guidance rather than through hatred or hostility, said Deputy President of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

He cautioned that failing to handle such matters tactfully could worsen the situation, emphasising the need for respect and decency even when correcting mistakes.

“It should also be reminded to certain parties that the issue of the flag being flown upside down should not be addressed selectively. All parties responsible for causing this misunderstanding must be reprimanded fairly,” he said in a statement on Monday.

“A public awareness campaign should be strengthened so that all Malaysians understand the proper way to fly the flag and appreciate the meaning behind each stripe and colour,” he added.

His comments followed the circulation of a 21-second video showing a man hoisting the Malaysian flag upside down on a long wooden or metal pole, while another individual filmed the act.

Mujahid stressed that the improper hoisting of the national flag—deliberate or otherwise—could lead to public misunderstanding, erode patriotic sentiment, and jeopardise national harmony.

“The Jalur Gemilang is not just a piece of cloth—it is a symbol of sovereignty, dignity, and unity for the Malaysian people. It must be treated with respect by every citizen,” he said.

“We take the recent incident involving the upside-down flag very seriously. Decades after independence, it is disappointing that some remain insensitive or careless about how the national flag should be displayed,” he continued.

Mujahid also urged the authorities to conduct a full investigation into the incident, take appropriate legal action, and ensure such occurrences are not repeated.

“Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of our national identity and shared pride. Its dignity must be upheld without compromise,” he said. - August 11, 2025
