PITAS: An 11-year-old girl was found drowned in Sungai Bengkoka on Wednesday morning after going missing while swimming with four cousins at Kampung Pondoi near here on Tuesday afternoon.
Pitas Fire and Rescue Station chief Noor Jali Maslah identified the deceased as Nurfaizah Azidah Johari, whose body was discovered by villagers at 7.36am about one kilometre from the Fire Control Centre.
Two other girls, aged 14 and four, were nearly drowned and sent to hospital for treatment, while two teenagers escaped unhurt.
Firefighters, who initiated a search and rescue (SAR) operation along a one-kilometre radius following a 5.17pm distress call on Tuesday, retrieved the body and handed it over to the police after health officials confirmed the death.
