METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Don Artes and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Antonio Nafarrete met to discuss the proposed construction of a rainwater catchment facility inside Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
In a statement on Wednesday, the agency said the proposed facility is part of the MMDA Sponge City Project, which aligns with national flood control directives.
"Pursuant to the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to explore ways to utilize and manage collected rainwater, the proposed facility with an estimated capacity of 50,000 cubic meters was discussed as an additional measure in rainwater management," the MMDA said.
University of the Philippines Resilience Institute Executive Director and UP NOAH Director Alfredo Mahar Lagmay joined the meeting to provide technical recommendations on water management and the "Sponge City" concept.
"As part of the Sponge City approach, the project aims to identify areas and methods where rainwater can be temporarily retained to reduce its sudden flow into drainage systems and help in flood mitigation," the agency added.
MMDA Physical Planning and Spatial Development Service Director Michael Gison and First Civil-Military Operations Group Director Mark Navarro were also present during the briefing.
