MMEA foils bid to smuggle in cosmetic items in Semporna

SEMPORNA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle in cosmetic items worth over RM26,000 off Pulau Gaya waters, here, Thursday.

Semporna Maritime Zone Director, Commander Amir Shubli said, while carrying duties under Op Pluto Timur, Op Cegah Pati and Op Tiris, the MMEA team received information at 1.55am and rushed to the location.

Upon arrival, the team spotted a suspicious boat heading towards north of Pulau Gaya.

“When approached, the skipper fled by jumping into the sea and swimming towards Pulau Gaya.

According to Amir, the case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (a) of the Customs Act 1967.

He said following the discovery, Semporna MMEA will conduct a detailed investigation to trace the suspect, believe to be actively involved in smuggling activities around the district.

“Semporna MMEA will continue to intensify patrolling and enforcement around the hotspots especially at the country’s water borders to curb smuggling activities and the entry of illegals into the State through the water route.
